Tried it last night, pretty damn good.

It's uber simple and clean, which is good. Unfortunately most novice users who'd appreciate all that aren't already GMail users (tending to still be on HotMail or something), and Google Talk doesn't seem to let you sign up for an account when you install it.

That said, I'm still recommending Skype. It's clean, cross platform (Win, Mac, Linux, PDA), pretty clean itself, and lets you do file transfers too. Undoubtedly Google Talk will catch up, and, sure, you can use the Jabber protocol on other OS to connect to Google Talk, but with a Windows only client for the talk stuff it's a bit of a waste of time really.

Update from our conversation (!) last night - Jimmy signed up for Gmail so I reckon we'll be talking online instead of making phone calls when we're at home, once he's back online.

But I thought it was good fun and if they can add a webcam facility as well - it'll be superb!
