Printing... cha! [Aug. 30th, 2006|11:00 pm]
The Love Bug
[Current Mood |happyhappy]

I've just installed our new wireless printer server. Interestingly enough, I had to install the thing on Caroline's laptop, as the initial setup wizard has to be run under Windows.

What made me laugh though, is that my Ubuntu laptop connected to the print server, and printed successfully to the printer first time, whereas getting the printer connected and setup on Caroline's laptop was a nightmare!!

Do I regret switching to Ubuntu? No! Do I resent hardware manufacturers for excluding all but Windows users? Hell yeah!

Heh, I had a little fun and games installing our printer (which sits on my (Ubuntu) PC) on Nic's PC.

I got it going in the end, by using CUPS on this PC, and setting up the port on Nic's PC to print to it, which does actually work quite well.

How comes the wireless print server needed a setup/install anyway?

It had to be installed (over a wired LAN, incidentally) to set its address settings and WLAN security, before it could be released onto the WLAN.

As far as I know, many standalone LAN devices need to be 'installed' in the same way. We have a network storage adapter, which puts an external USB HDD on the network as a NAS device, and that has to be installed the same way.
